Building with wood and straw

Residence Almere

This residence will be built out of straw and wood. The design consists of two components. A small and straight tower with a wooden structure, in which parts of 600mm will be used to avoid any loss of materials. The tower will be integrated in an organically shaped lower structure which will be built out of straw because there is more flexibility in creating the shape when working with stacks of straw that are covered in a layer of loam.
Practicality is an important factor in the design of this residence. The partition in two components is continued into the interior. The lower structure contains the ‘living areas’ and tower contains the ‘service areas’ with solar collectors on the roof which is directed to the south. This partition was also continued visually in the exterior through subtle differences in the use of wood and plaster
